Palm Beach Zoo || Aldabra Tortoise Experience

Those who follow Skinny Latte Mommy on Facebook know that my little family recently visited the Palm Beach Zoo.  We had a positively lovely St. Patrick's Day exploring the zoo and enjoying an up-close encounter with an Aldabra TortoiseThe following are a few of our photos from the visit.

Be sure to scroll all the way to the bottom to find out how you can win tickets to the Palm Beach Zoo.

We began the day with a carousel and kiddie train ride.
As usual, this was a highlight for Miss Cupcake.

Next we heading off to the Aldabra Tortoise ExperienceThis experience gave us the opportunity to go behind the scenes with one of the world's largest tortoises.  We were amazed at how huge they actually were!  We learned some fascinating facts from the friendly staff while feeding the tortoises their favorite greens, giving them a bath, and (of course) taking photos.

This was truly a memorable and fun experience!

We were surprised to learn that tortoises are actually quite smart!

This tortoise weighs around 400 lbs!

Bathing the Aldabra Tortoises was great fun.
While Miss Cupcake was a bit intimidated by the large creatures, she talked about them non-stop on the drive home.  She was quite impressed and excited about the experience!

Miss Cupcake was highly amused by the friendly "little" iguana that was hanging out with the tortoises.

Next, we took a stroll around the zoo.  The butterfly garden was gorgeous and provided us with the opportunity to view these beautiful creatures up close.

We decided to take in a couple of the daily shows.  Our favorite was the awe-inspiring Wings Over Water show which features over 20 trained birds.  As you can see from this photo, the birds came into the audience for a fun interactive experience.

We were all amused by the way this trained bird was able to match the shapes to drop into the bucket.

I loved the fact that all of the animals seemed so happy and healthy!

Miss Cupcake and Daddy enjoyed lounging in the Bald Eagle nest.

Our experience at the zoo was certainly a pleasant one.
I highly recommend scheduling one (or more!) of the several Animal Experiences during your visit.

What is omega-3 & why should I take it?

With my 30th birthday looming in the not-so-distant future, I have began taking my heath and skincare regimen a bit more seriously.  For the past few months, I have searched the internet for products and supplements that may be beneficial in keeping my looking and feeling my best.  I have tested many products so that I could see for myself what worked and what did not.  Over the next few weeks, I will be sharing some of those findings with all of you in a beauty and health series.

I consistently found that doctors and nutritionists that suggested incorporating omega-3 supplements into a healthy diet.  To be quite honest, I did not have much knowledge about what omega-3 was and why I needed it.  However, after personally experiencing the benefits of omega-3, I am excited to share the following information.

What Are Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Omega-3 fatty acids are a group of unsaturated fats that provide a variety of health and beautify benefits.  Unfortunately, the human body does produce these brain-boosting, cholesterol-clearing good fats on its own. Therefore, we must obtain omega-3 from various foods and supplements.

What Omega-3 Can Do For You
Omega-3 can provide relief of symptoms for a wide range of physical aliment including, but not limited to, the following: Heart Disease, Memory Loss , Depression, Asthma and ADHD.  During the couple months that I have been deliberately adding more omega-3 to my diet, I have noticed an increase in memory and my brain feels less foggy (for an exhausted mommy, that is a big accomplishment).

In addition to the health benefits, omega-3 helps keep your hair healthy, shiny and lustrous. The "healthy fats" keep your skin hydrated and and glowing.  I have personally experienced noticeable results in my skin and hair after incorporating a higher level of omega-3 into my diet.

Ways To Add Omega-3 Into Your Diet
There are many ways to add omega-3 into your diet.
For vegetarians, such as myself, omega-3 can be found in the following foods:

Vegetarian Omega-3 supplements
Winter Squash (such as acorn squash and butternut squash)
Sees (such as flax, chia and hemp seeds)
Leafy Greens

Non-vegetarians and pescatarians (those who eat fish and seafood but no other forms of meat) can obtain omega-3 from eating fish two to three times a week or taking fish oil supplements.

Possible Side Effects Of Fish Oil
As with all supplements, there are possible side effects of fish oil. Taking too much fish oil puts you at risk of thin blood and an increased the chance of bleeding. Extremely high doses may also weaken the body's immune system, lowering a your ability to fight against disease. Fish oil has been known to interact with birth control pills in some cases [source: WebMD].  Be sure to discuss any supplements with your doctor and follow the suggested dosage on the label.

What To Look For When Buying Fish Oil
While it may be tempting to grab the cheapest omega-3 at the drug store, it is important to take a high quality supplement. Young Life Research Triple Strength Omega-3 Fish Oil  uses only the finest fish oil at the highest recommend dosage.  This formulation is exactly what your body needs to achieve superior health and beauty benefits.  Young Life Research Triple Strength Omega-3 Fish Oil is pure and contains an very low level of mercury compared to the cheaper supplements on the market.

Shhhhhhhh.... Here is a sneaky little peek at what is going to be inside a certain little ladies Easter basket.

Nursery to Big Girl Room Decor

“I am a princess. All girls are. Even if they live in tiny old attics.
Even if they dress in rags, even if they aren’t pretty, or smart, or young. They’re still princesses.”
― Frances Hodgson BurnettA Little Princess
Miss Cupcake and I have had oodles of fun transforming her nursery into a big girl room.
For a not-quite-three year old, she had a great deal of input into the decor selection.
We had a truly lovely time working together on this project and are excited to share our DIYs and product finds!

This dressers was an upcycle project.
We took a very ugly dresser, painted it white and added Vktech 40mm Crystal Glass Drawers Handles

The LOVE sign is another DIY from items we snatched at Michael's.
The tulle puff (which are also hanging in the corner of her room) were made using the same method as the

This whimsical Piper Ballerina Jewelry Box from Mele & Co. is a favorite of Miss Cupcake.
She loves watching the twirling dancer and carefully arranging her jewelry.
So many gorgeous designs are available... I need one of the adult jewelry boxes for myself!

This 3 pc Silver Chrome Girls Vanity Set  added an extra girly touch to her dresser.
Miss Cupcake loves to "fix" her hair with the feather soft brush and peek at her reflection in the mirror.

After a diligent search, I found this handmade table top dress form on Ebay.

The hair bow holder and toy shelf were one of the few things that we kept from the nursery.

Our goal was to keep things as frilly and princessy as possible!
We found a lovely lavender and white floral quilt that we were both happy with.

Since Miss Cupcake's room has hardwood floors, I added this scalloped rug from Target to give her a cozy surface to play.  This area rug really pulled the entire room together.

These white ruffled curtains from Target brightened up her room immediately.

These Pierre Cut Crystal  from Urbanest curtain rods added a little bit of sparkle!

Miss Cupcake enjoys reading books on her lavender rocking bench.
This adorable plush doll is from GirlzNDollz and the personalized blanket is from Veeshee
(if this blanket looks familiar, it's because it was recently featured in a giveaway!)

 We adore personalized items!
This adorable banner from PaperEtcStudio, an Etsy store that sells custom banners in your choice of colors and embossing patterns for all occasions.  This was perfect for the wall above the bed.

We used a large basked from Home Goods to store stuffed animals and toys.

My favorite corner of the room is this tiny little dressing area.
I found this child sized coat rack at a children's consignment shop.
It was originally multicolored, but we painted it white to match the decor.

I grabbed an inexpensive mirror from Target and lined it with a crocheted ribbon.
For a final touch, I added a bunch of lavender flowers to the corner.

Miss Cupcake and I enjoyed every moment of this room transformation!
A few final touches still need to be added.
Keep an eye on Skinny Latte Mommy on Facebook for updates.
